TROUBLESHOOTING WI-FI ACCESS

Free wireless high speed internet access is provided in all the Ashtonville Public Library locations (www.ashtonville.gov/public-library) . WiFi is available at all times the libraries are open. We invite you to bring your laptop to one of our locations and access the Internet. There are a limited number of electrical outlets throughout the library but it is recommended you bring a fully charged battery along with you.

Patrons are responsible for troubleshooting and configuring their own device to connect to the wireless network.

Library staff is unable to provide support but below are the most common problems and solutions to connecting to the internet.

Remember please be responsible and courteous in your use of the Wifi service!

COMMON PROBLEMS:

You do not need a log-in or password to use the wifi service but you do require a properly configured wireless network card.

Make sure your hardware is compatible and your laptop has a wireless network card. i.e. You will need a WiFi-compliant 802.11a/b/g wireless Ethernet device installed in your laptop or a laptop with built-in WiFi capability. Set your wireless network adapter's Network Identifier (also known as SSID or Network Name) to network named sdpl as well as a web browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, or Opera. Enable “Obtain an IP address automatically” option under TCP/IP settings.

Library Hot Spot not appearing in your network connections?

To find the Library's hot spots, click on your wireless icon in the taskbar. If no icon is present:

Click Start, Settings then Network Connections or Connect to under LAN settings:

Right click Wireless Network Connection and then click View Available Wireless Networks (a list of wireless access points appears in the Available Networks box)

Click the APL wireless connection

Click Connect

Once it says Connected, open an Internet browser to test the connection. The Library Internet terms of use will pop up automatically. Read and then click 'I agree' to access the internet.

If you can’t locate the APL network, you may need to refresh or restart your computer.

Is your wireless signal weak?

You may not be within range of a wireless access point. Make sure you are within the library, if the branch has several floors; the ground floor often has the strongest signal. Move to different areas of the library to test signal strength.

Restarting your computer or disconnecting then reconnecting to the network or running diagnose and repair option under wireless network diagnostics may help.

Make sure your Wi-fi is enabled.

Some laptops have on/off buttons for internet connection. Make sure yours is turned on.

Is your internet connection unstable?

Make sure you are connected to the right network (apl). Try clearing your browser cache or verifying you have an IP address. It can take up to a minute to load so be patient while connecting. You can determine if you have an IP number by typing the following in the Windows command prompt window: ipconfig/all (displays the full configuration information). Another option is to try releasing and renewing your IP address. In Windows, type the following in the command prompt window: ipconfig/release (releases the IP address; ipconfig/renew (renews the IP address)

Help, I can't print on your WiFi?

Wireless printing is not available but you can save your documents on your flash drive or use one of the library terminals to print your documents. There is a charge for printing.
